An Officer and a Viperman

At the Joe base, a group of Joes are complaining to Sergeant Slaughter about a recent mission gone sour. Apparently, the Cobras knew every move the Joes were going to make, even before they made them. Pathfinder, Ambush and Topside suspect that there’s a traitor in the Joes’ midst. Which is problematic, since the only two people who knew any details about the mission were General Hawk and Sarge and they didn’t even tell the folks involved the plans until right before the mission was supposed to go off.
The three Joes come up with a plan to try and infiltrate Cobra to find out how they know what’s going on and see if they can ferret out who the traitor is. Sarge tells them to be careful and hurry back since the General is bringing back a new secret weapon called the Battle Axe in three days.
The Joes go to a seedy part of town and find a Cobra recruiting poster. Then they find a nearby Cobra recruiting office. Inside, they get recruited and sent off with a bunch of other reprobates to the Cobra Viper Training Center. Before they leave, however, one last recruit jumps on the truck. HE’s a naïve young Southern-sounding man with the first name Hubert who says he’s going to be the best Cobra Viper ever!
At the training center, we get to see Destro in a Smokey The Bear hat, of the sort popular with DI instructors. He welcomes the recruits to the center and gives them the obligatory insult the men speech before sending them off to be trained.
Another Cobra takes over, also wearing a DI hat. He tells the recruits that they’ll have to make it to the top of the waterfall and that the first person to make it to the top gets a bonus of the salaries of everyone who falls in! The recruits then proceed to try and climb the side of the waterfall with several, including a couple Joes, falling in. Ambush makes it to the top, where the DI tells him godo job but that next time he should make it easier to climb to the top by pushing the others in. Ambush then proceeds to push the DI in. The DI is pleased by this, ‘cause y’know, that’s how Cobra’s are.
Switch to another training exercise, this one in the middle of a lake. The recruits are in the water and Undertow says for someone to release the electric eels. This time, instead of fighting his fellow recruits as instructed, Top Side flips Undertow’s boat and sits on top of it. Bwah! Once again, this behavior is encouraged since Cobras are supposed to be sneaky underhanded bastards!
The third test involves a group of recruits running alongside Destro as he drives along in some improbable looking Cobra vehicle. Pathfinder and Hubert are out in front of the pack and doing quite well. Destro (still wearing the DI hat) stops the run and says that clearly the reason Pathfinder and Hubert are doing so well is because they’re cheating! He commends them for their efforts and says they’re exactly the sort that Cobra’s looking for.
Graduation! The recruits are gathered and Hubert is eagerly awaiting the speech that Cobra Commander is going to give. HE talks about what a great hero the Commander is. HE knows the Commadner is a hero because he read about his exploits in his book where he outlines his heroism in chapters one two and three.
Pathfinder and Hubert have a brief discussion on heroism. Pathfinder puts forth the idea that a real hero wouldn’t write a book and TELL you he’s a hero. Hubert, for now, remains unconvinced.
Cobra Commander speaks to the graduates and singles out three for special recognition for their exemplifying of the three Rs of Cobra: Routing, (w)Recking and Ruination! The three Cobras so recognized are Lieutenants Green, Brown and Black who are none other than our own Pathfinder, Ambush and Top Side (in no particular order, since I still am not sure which alias goes with which Joe).
The three Jobras are recognized by being sent to steal the Battle Axe. They still haven’t learned who is the leak though we, the audience, learn that the Joe base is currently in Tokyo Bay. Which makes me wonder why all the recruits are gaijin rather than Japanese. Maybe they’re ex-pats who got sick of teaching English and watching anime.
The Joes proceed to plan the attack on their own base and the plan goes off pretty dang well. Probably because for once the good guys are leading the fight. They manage to help Destro and CC steal the Battle Axe as well as capture Sarge and General Hawk.
Back at the Cobra base the Jobras receive the Award of the Distinguished Two-Headed Serpent and we learn that once again Cobra is strapped for cash as Cobra Commander rather sheepishly admits he can’t pay them the bonuses he promised them. Ambush says something to the effect that serving Cobra is reward enough. CC buys this and heads off leaving the Jobras alone for the moment. Top Side mocks Ambush’s answer and briefly mutters about maybe Ambush is the spy. But the accusations are derailed when Hubert runs up to them and congratulates them on their award. Ambush tells Huber that medals don’t make the man.
Cobra Commander decides to take his three star pupils and show them Cobra’s advantage.
The advantage turns out to be a collection of electronic cockroaches (‘bugs’) that are set to home in on Mrs. Meadows Chocolate Chip Cookies and transmit anything said within 100 yards of them. They can even track the crumbs.
Mrs. Meadows Chocolate Chip Cookies are Hawk’s favorite kind of cookie. Hawk, it seems, isn’t the traitor, but his sweet tooth is.
One of the Jobras nearly blows their cover by saying, out loud, “So General Hawk wasn’t the traitor!” Cobra Commander snorts at this and takes the Jobras to Hawk’s interrogation where they get to see, first hand, Sarge and Hawk refuse to answer any of CC’s questions.
Cobra Commander leaves the room with Destro to try and get the Battle Axe working. While they’re gone, the Joes plot how to bust Cobra’s chops this time around. The Jobras also reveal the secret of the bugs. Hakw has the decency to look sheepish and says he should probably go on that diet now…
The Battle Axe, luckily, was booby-trapped and the General has a plan….
We come back from commercial break to find out that the Jobras were supposedly ‘jumped’ by Sarge and Hawk. Cobra Commander demotes them on the spot and bitches out Destro since these three were his recruits so it’s his fault (this becomes a recurring theme in the latter half of this episode).
We learn that Cobra has fifteen other Joes prisoner when Hawk and Sarge loudly and blatantly discuss plans to move in a new super weapon in front of the bugs. The plans are fake, meant only to draw CC and Cobra into a trap and give the Joes time to escape.
Back at the Cobra base, the three Jobras are put in charge of the stockade. Once the Commander and Destro are gone, they manage to free their fellow Joes and start shooting up the place. The Joes escape and take Hubert, whose since had a change of heart, with them.
What’s weird? Pathfinder says he had a talk with Hubert that helped the guy to change his mind about Cobra. But we never SEE the talk. More in a minute on this.
CC and Destro arrive where the new super weapon is supposed to be being transported through. At first no one is there. “HE stood me up!” Cobra Commander whines. Destro gives a long suffering sigh and says something along the lines of don’t’ tell me, I know, it’s all my fault.
Then, the Joes do show up in force and quickly route Cobra (maybe that’s why it’s one of the Rs of Cobra, they’re always being routed…). Cobra Commander looks up to see Pathfinder, Ambush and Top Side looking down from him from above. He realizes then that his three best recruits were really Joes.
“Kinda destroys your faith in humanity, eh snakeface?” says Ambush. Yes, yes it does. What sort of world is it where the good guys pretending to be bad guys are better at it than the actual bad guys!?
Destro takes the blame again and the Joes are all happy.
Back in Hawk’s office, Hubert asks Hawk “Why would Cobra Commander write all those things in his book if they weren’t true?”
To which Hawk replies: “Because son, he needs trusting people like you to believe in him or Cobra wouldn’t exist.”
Hubert gets irritatingly huffy about how this isn’t fair and how if Hawk’ll let him he’d like to join the Joes. Pathfinder says something about how he bets Hubert’ll be the best recruit the Joes ever had. And then someone brings in the electronic bugs they found and everybody starts stomping on them.
Which is somehow Destro’s fault in Cobra Commander’s eyes.

Comics#34

The Iron Master, swordsmith of the Arashikage Clan, looks deep into mystical jewels and sees what transpires.
At a Ninja Dojo in the Sierra Mountains, a ninja apprentice named Tiger Claw is kidnapped while Jinx and Snake Eyes are distracted. At the same time in a Red Ninja Temple in Tibet, Storm Shadow, Slice, and Slash discover that Storm Shadow's apprentice, Shadow Strike, has also been kidnapped. Both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow receive a mysterious message stating "Arashikage Dojo, Midnight" and the ninjas head to Japan.
The Iron Master then delves into the history of the Arashikage Clan, mentioning the four trials, and that Storm Shadow's father, the Hard Master was killed by an assassin. Storm Shadow believes that Snake Eyes caused his father's death, and now serves Cobra Commander.
The Iron Master says that long before Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes began their training, a similar rift was formed between himself and his sword brother, the Black Dragon. The Black Dragon began to rely on guns and failed his ninja training, forming his own army. Black Dragon now looks to gain power from the medallions held by the two apprentices, Shadow Strike and Tiger Claw.
Duke and Scarlett make an appearance discussing the whereabouts of their ninja friend, as do Baroness and Destro (Destro mistakenly calls Storm Shadow's apprentice Quick Strike).
In Japan, Iron Master informs Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow that they must work together to rescue their apprentices. The Iron Master had sent the mysterious messages.
In the Black Dragon's volcano fortress in Peru, Black Dragon reveals his plan. Unite the two medallion halves under the light of the fire moon and gain control over the very heart of the Arashikage. Hearing this, Tiger Claw and Shadow Strike agree to work together to escape.
Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes arrive in Peru with Jinx, Kamakura, Slice, and Slash. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes stop Black Dragon from harnessing the power of the medallions.
Inside the fortress, Tiger Claw and Shadow Strike escape and battle Black Dragon Troopers with the help of Jinx, Kamakura, Slice, and Slash.
Snake Eyes saves Storm Shadow from being knocked into hot lava, and then the two work together to knock Black Dragon in.
All the ninjas reunite, and state that the next time they meet it will be as enemies, and the last panel shows Black Dragon's hand emerging from the lava.
Notes- Throughout the issue, Shadow Strike appears in a different design than the one shown for the action figure. Shadow Strike's comic attire looks more like Tiger Claw's or Kamakura's, and Slash's comic attire looks like Shadow Strike's action figure. Also, Slice appears in an older uniform, not the one used for the most recent action figures.

Bullhorn rams the entrance with the R.T.V., drawing fire as the rest of the team enters through the skylight. Low Light, Shockwave, and Long Arm quickly enter and meet with Bullhorn, and drive through to a rear room.
Once inside, the S.W.A.T. team finds B.A.T.S assembling weapons mudules. Surmising that the only other man in the room, Hotwire, is controlling the B.A.T.S, they move in to strike. Unfortunately, Hotwire barricades himself and orders the B.A.T.S to attack the Joes. Low Light and Shockwave attempt to break into Hotwire's room while Bullhorn and Long Arm dispatch the B.A.T.S in the R.T.V.
Back on the street, Sure Fire alerts his informants that Gristle and the Headhunters are apporaching their position.
Back in the warehouse, Low Light and Shockwave finally break into Hotwire's room just as he activates more B.A.T.S. The Joes pursuade Hotwire to deactivate the B.A.T.S.
Sure Fire alerts the other Joes to evacuate the warehouse. As Gristle arrives in the Rage tank, Sure Fire's informants convince Gristle to open fire on the factory, demolishing it. AS the smoke clears, the Joes drive past a confused Gristle. Hotwire emerges from the rubble in his Mech, quite annoyed.

A C-130 piloted by Wild Bill tracks Storm Shadow and the kidnapped Scarlett on their CLAW. Wild Bill's passenger, Snake Eye's prepares to bail out.
At the Slient Castle, Destro watches Storm Shadow chain Scarlett in the dungeon over the security cameras. An alert warns Destro of radar masking. As a Cobra soldier watches the C-130 fly overhead from the castle parapet, Snake Eyes makes his descent.
Storm Shadow enters the security room where Destro sits. They see on one of the cameras that Scarlett has already escaped her chains. Storm Shadow grabs a katana and leaves.
Snake Eyes lands and fights the guard on the parapet.
Scarlett makes her way through the castle, hiding from Cobras and Storm Shadow, stumbling upon two Cobras handling a CLAW. At the same time, Snake Eyes makes his way through the castle, Destro confers with Cobra Commander over a viewscreen, and the Red Ninjas emerge from their place of hiding. Scarlett secures the CLAW and pilots it through the halls of the castle, causing chaos among the Cobra troops before escaping through an open window.
As Snake Eyes battles the Red Ninjas and Storm Shadow, the fight brings them out onto the castle parapet once more. The Cobras and Destro make their way up. On the parapet, an unarmed Snake Eyes faces down Storm Shadow and his katana when Scarlett flies by with the CLAW. She grabs onto Snake Eyes and flies away just as Storm Shadow throws his katana at them. Destro and the others arrive a moment too late.
As Snake Eyes and Scarlett make their way back to the C-130, the wrappings on Storm Shadow's forearm come loose, revealing his Arishikage tattoo.

A boy named Adam takes a bike from his house across the seemingly peaceful town of Springfield. Daydreaming, he nearly runs into a limo driven by a Cobra Officer, Scarface. Two Springfield police officers nearly chew out scarface until they realize he is chauffering an incognito Cobra Commander. The limo drives off and the policemen send Adam on his way.
Adam arrives at the Video World Arcade, late for his work. He walks into the basement to find Professor Appel trying to fix the brainwave scanner. The scanner's software has crashed and Adam sits down in front of a laptop to reboot the device.
Scarface and Cobra Commander arrive at the Springfield Museum of Antiquities. The Commander complains about Scarface's chauffering and threatens him when scarface replies sarcastically. The Commander makes his way to the museum's basement and dons his normal attire.
Realizing he's late for his dentist appointment, Adam leaves Professor Appel to fix the scanner alone. Adam is grateful Dr. Bender is such a mellow person or else his tardiness would place him in real trouble. Inside, Dr. Bender explains to Adam that he spends his time thinking of way to alleviate the pain dental procedures cause, showing Adam a new device which he hopes will stop pain in the nervous system. Dr. Bender intends to test the device on himself.
Cobra Commander meets with Destro and the Baroness and begins his morning target practice. He whispers to a nearby Scarface to summon Zartan.
Deep under Springfield, Cora Commander orders Zartan to find out what Destro and the Baroness are planning.
Back in the arcade, Professor Appel checks on Adam through the dental office's security cameras. Seeing the explosions there, Appel assumes it must be a G.I. Joe attack and sounds the alarm.
Seemingly the entire town of Springfild mobilizes, elevating hidden weapons and sending a convoy os HISS tanks and armored trucks to the Broca Medical Complex. Rattlers are even mobilized. Adam calms everyone down, thinking only that Dr. Binder is having a medical emergency. An angry Cobra Commander asks who sounded the alarm while a nervous Appel looks on.
Professor Appel and his daughter Candy are transferred in disgrace to Staten Island, Dr. Binder has a change of personality and calls himself Dr. Mindbender, Adam has his teeth fixed the old fashioned way, and mistrust still remains among the upper echelons of Cobra.

At Cobra Headquarters in Springfield, Cobra Commander concludes a formal meeting, making Tomax and Xamot commanders of the Crimson Guard. Leaving the ceremony, Tomax and Xamot are confronted by other members of the upper Cobra echelons, with each expressing their concerns about the newcomers.
The twins drive to the Arbco Plastic Surgery clinic, where they meet with Dr. "H" and ask about the progress of the Fred Series creations. Walking through the clinic halls, they observe Crimson Guardsmen in various stages of training. Dr. H promises the twins that many Freds will rendezvous with their circus caravan.
ATransporting an Armadillo along route 3 in New Jersey, Flint asks Duke about his new secret unit. Duke evades the question when a speeding van zooms by them. The van is followed by a speeding Arbco garbage truck. When a ladder on the van comes loose and tumbles to the road, the Crimson Twins fly out in front on a Ferret ATV and catch it.
Seeing the stunt, Duke and Flint are reminded of an op they underwent in Trucial Abysmia with Roadblock. In a flashback, Flint recalls the three of them driving in a humvee, chasing down an armored car with two passengers they believe to be Benzheenis. Unbeknownst to them, the passengers of the armored car are actually Tomax and Xamot. To avoid fire, they drive into an oil refinery. Flint drives up to them when Roadblock attempts to hit the twins with his ma-deuce. The twins avoid the blows with some fancy driving, a trick Flint will not soon forget.
Back in the present, Gung Ho and Blowtorch stand guard outside the Fort Wadsworth motor pool when several Joes leave with captured HISS tanks. They have orders from Duke to meet at a testing site. As they drive down the road, Fred I sees them and wonders if some big Cobra operation is occuring. His wife cuts him off before he can contact Cobra headquarters. At that moment, a busload of Freds drive by, prompting more surprise from Fred I. Immediately after, Bongo and Ripcord drive by on their way to Candy's father, causing Fred I to duck down in his seat so as not to be recognized.
Candy and Ripcord arrive at her house. Candy calls for her father, explaining to Ripcord that the back room is off-limits as he has some dumb uniforms from a sacred lodge back there. Professor Appel calls back that he is finishing some lodge business, when in reality he actually has a sketch of the Terror Drome.
The next night, Tomax and Xamot perform stunts on their Ferret ATV in the circus. Cutter and doc are thoroughly impressed with the act, remarking that more Joes should see the performance.

In the London subways, Storm Shadow confronts and bests Slice and Dice, intending to find the location of Firefly. Dice tels Storm Shadow that Firefly is just down the street from their location.
Storm Shadow sneaks into Firefly's building, dodging traps and fighting B.A.T.s. Sorm Shadow discovers he's inside a B.A.T. factory when Firefly appears. The two exchange words as they fight.
Firefly reveals he paid a visit to Storm Shadow's aunt, leaving explosives behind set to detonate if he dies. Storm Shadow then informs Firefly that he kept tabs on him, sending Tripwire and Tunnel Rat to his aunt's house to remove the bombs.
Storm Shadow defeats Firefly, but instead of killing him, he says he found Firefly's sister. Firefly thought her dead, but she was instead taken prisoner. Storm Shadow rescued her and gave her a home in the south of France. He gives Firefly her address, telling him the circle of revenge can end if he wants it.
Storm Shadow leaves Firefly alone in the factory. After a moment, Firefly pulls out charges and sets the place ablaze.

On the USS Flagg, Roadblock hoists down a Pirahna boat as Shipwreck watches. In the command deck, Admiral Keel-Haul expresses his concern to Torpedo about having Shipwreck patrol for the Flagg. Torpedo vouches for Shipwreck.
On Cobra Island, Cobra Commander informs Copperhead of the importance of his mission, as Copperhead takes off in a Moray.
Shipwreck reports an all-clear back to the Flagg when Dial-Tone reports Rattlers attacking. Ace takes on the Rattlers with the Skystriker, but Shipwreck remains the sole support for the Flagg on the water. At that moment, two torpedoes race by, headed for the Flagg. Shipwreck takes out one with the machine gun, but misses the second. He steers into the path of the torpedo, intending to take it out himself. Fortunately, the torpedo had not yet activated the explosive charge, and only collided with the Pirahna.
Copperhead arrives in the Moray and rams the Pirahna, destroying it. Shipwreck bails out, and as Copperhead makes another pass, grapples on and boards the Moray. Shipwreck and Copperhead fight, with Copperhead momentarily gaining the edge.
Copperhead again turns his attention to attacking the Flagg, but Shipwreck isn't quite out of the fight. Shipwreck eventually defeats Copperhead, driving the Moray back to the Flagg.

In Eastern Borovia, Duke, Roadblock, and Scarlett approach a train intending to take its cargo. On the other side of the tracks, Red Star, Horro-Show, and Daina plan the same thing. Both their vehicles accelerate to get in front of the train, collide, and crash. Everyone is fine, but Duke and Red Star remain on the train battling each other! Soon, the two learn they are there for the same purpose - to prevent Borovian terrorists from hijacking a WMD the train is carrying. Unfortunately, their compatriots do not yet know this, and they attack each other as they try to catch up to the train.
Declaring a truce, Red Star and Duke try to stop the train, only to find the throttle has been welded open at full speed. This could lead to a catastrophic crash within a crowded city.
An armored car at the rear of the train opens fire on the pursuing Joes and Oktober Guard. The two factions stop fighting each other and concentrate on the terrorists still on the train. Duke and Red Star decide to take on the terrorist in the passenger cars, as Roadblock and Horror-Show get more agressive in their tactics against the armored car.
Duke and Red Star discover the terrorists are actually Night Creepers in disguise. They meet up with Roadblock and Horror-Show shortly after they make the same discovery. Finished with the Night Creepers, The Joes and Oktober Guard finds their objective - the laser modulator. Red Star declares the temporary truce over as a Cobra helicopter with the Baroness arrives.
As the train rolls closer to the rail yard, a curve in the track allows Red Star to open fire on the train engine with the armored car's turret. This derails the train and both Joes and Oktober Guard jump to their vehicles for safety. The Baroness manages to capture the laser modulator before the train crashes.
Red Star smiles, knowing that once the laser modulator is activated, it will transmit all the data on the Cobra computers back to Moscow. Duke is happy too, for he knows there is installed a virus that will destroy the Russian computers once the data is transmitted there. The Joes' part in the mission was merely a ruse.

While fencing with his Iron Grenadiers at Castle Destro, Nullifiers interrupt Destro to announce their readiness. Destro knows Cobra Commander is spying on him, a revelation that annoys the Commander to no end. He demands to know where the Toxo-Vipers infiltrating the castle are.
Near the castle, Outback returns from a reconnaisance run to his camp where he meets with Sneak-Peek. Nearby Outback finds an antenna and smashes it. The antenna smacks into the head of a Tele-Viper in an underground tunnel. He, a Techno-Viper, and a Toxo-Viper start complaining about their jobs.
Baroness drives up to the castle, informing Destro that his neighbor, Lord Malaprop, is building a structure that abuts his estate. Destro leaves to have words with the Lord, leaving Baroness to resume the training with the Iron Grenadiers.
Back on Cobra Island, Cobra Commander prepares to let his forces attack when a Tele-Viper mentions he cannot reach his counterpart in Scotland.
Outback rips out the antenna, but the Iron Grenadier fencing Baroness overhears it. He tries to get the Baroness to listen to him, but she thinks it is just a feint to let down her guard.
Destro and Lord Malaprop exchange barbs about the construction going on in the property. Lord Malaprop contends it is only a drainage issue.
Under the castle, the Toxo-Viper sets up a poisonous gas to flood the castle.
Destro returns to the castle to find the Iron Grenadier and Baroness still sparring. He grabs the sword, throws it into the ground, and drags off the Iron Grenadier. The sword punctures through the pipe the Toxo-Viper has connected to the gas tank. Inside the castle, Destro has given the Iron Grenadier a civilian disguise.
Sneak-Peek sees the gas escaping the ground and knock out a rabbit. He asks Outback if they brought gas masks when the disguised Iron Grenadier drives out of the castle. Neither Joe recognizes him.
The Iron Grenadier drives the countryside, wondering if Destro is correct in assuming Cobra is setting up an assualt. He drives by several disguised Cobra units.
Destro and Baroness inspect their vehicles, deciding to cover them with hay to hide them from satellites.
Back on Cobra Island, Cobra Commander listens to a report from the Toxo-Viper and decides he has togo over there in person.
Flint and Shockwave arrive at the Joes' camp and hear Sneak-Peeks report as Baroness and Destro eat dinner with some Iron Grenadiers. He decides that they'll inspect Lord Malaprop's construction site the next day.

At a remote Southwestern testing site, Tripwire finds a Cobra rocket trapped in an experimental stasis field. Duke calmly explains that the missile cannot move as he, Tripwire, and Heavy Duty head inside a pueblo.
A frustrated Cobra Commander spies on the site from his Cobra RV and wants to know what happened to their rocket as Dr. Mindbender and Destro surmise the truth. Destro warns Cobra Commander that he should not be sticking his head outside unprotected when the Commander reminds Destro he is wearing his new battle helmet beneath the cowl.
Inside the pueblo, Spirit and Mainframa analyze the Cobra missile and determine they have a few minutes to defuse it. Duke sends Tripwire back out to disarm the warhead as Mainframe spots the spying Cobras.
Destro and Cobra Commander hope Mindbender didn't install the self-destruct mechanism into the new battle helmet, even though Mindbender did.
Hoping to easily disarm the trigger on the warhead, Mainframe lets out a low end EM pulse. This does nothing to the rocket but does initiate the countdown on Cobra Commander's battle helmet!
Baroness takes off in her HISS towards the pueblo, hoping to knock the Cobra missile through the stasis field. She fires on the field, doing nothing except scaring Tripwire. Duke decides they need to counterattack, but in order to do so, they must lift the stasis field off the ground.
Destro determines that the only man capable of defusing Cobra Commander's battle helmet is Tripwire.
The Joes succeed in lifting a portion of the stasis field, which actually makes Tripwire's job a bit harder. Before he can finish, however, Destro flies by in a FANG and abducts him. Spirit rushes to finish the work on the rocket, but isn't sure which wire to cut.
Back at the Cobra RV, Tripwire is handcuffed to Cobra Commander. Tripwire and the Cobras find they have precious little time left before the battle helmet detonates. The RV drives up to the pueblo when Tripwire runs out, dragging Cobra Commander behind him. He tells Mainframe to help him and Spirit to cut the red wire. Spirit disarms the warhead and Mainframe resets the stasis field to lie just above Cobra Commander's skull.
The battle helmet detonates, but thanks to the stasis field, Cobra Commander is spared. The Cobras run off after Destro shoots apart the handcuffs connecting Tripwire and Cobra Commander. Unfortunately, the stasis field generator is destroyed. Mainframe says the hardware isn't quite ready yet.
In the escaping Cobra RV, Dr. Mindbender says he can develop a counter technology to the stasis field.

The Joes are fighting a Destro-led squad of vipers at a port. The tide is turned against the Joes as Cobra unleashes a group flight pods, a new type of technology, on the Joes. These new flight pods not only defeat the Joes and allow Destro to escape (with the help of Scrap Iron) but demolished an operation the Joes that had planned for weeks. These events are told in an after action report by Flint to Duke, who is in his sixties.
In Oregon near Mt. St. Hilary, a large space ship crashes in the forest. This ship has malfunctioned because it was ill-suited for interstellar travel. The ship's energy signature has been spotted and matched to a previous one by Cobra. Cobra Commander has dispatched a squad to retrieve the ship immediately.
A Decepticon, Starscream, in his updated F-16 airplane form, has been monitoring the Cobra forces on Cobra Island. He talks about how he is in an energon deprived state. Starscream has just recently reformatted himself to the current F-16 form that he is in. He also detected the incoming ship.
A Joe team is then sent to the crash site in Oregon. This team includes Snake-Eyes, Airtight, Bazooka, Blowtorch, and Doc and is lead by Flint. They meet up with Spirit, who was near the site of crash and was training some new Joe recruits. Those recruits are Cover Girl, Alpine, and Barbecue.
As the Joes arrive at the crash site they discover that Cobra has beaten them there. A fight begins between the two teams. Snake-Eyes takes out several of the vipers, just as a FANG helicopter is lifting a large tarp covered box out of the forest. Alpine and Bazooka work together to force the FANG to drop its cargo and then Blowtorch destroys it. The cargo is revealed to be a Transformer named Blaster. It is something that none of the Joes have ever seen before.
After returning to The Pit, Spirit and Flint are being de-briefed by Duke. He then introduces them to Scarlett and Stalker, who are also in their sixties. They show Flint and Spirit some archival footage of two Transformers fighting. Those Transformers are Megatron and Optimus Prime. This footage is the beginning of the arms race with Cobra. The Joes job is now to keep World War III from happening.

The secrets of G.I. Joe and Cobra's pasts are revealed as the greatest arms race in history intensifies, blazing a path across the world. Desperate for an equalizer, the Joes raid a top-secret Cobra bunker located in the Everglades. But when Cobra's newly hired Dreadnok biker gang intervenes, will the Joes be too late to gain the advantage and, more importantly, save their Autobot allies?!

FAN-FAVE FIREFLY DEBUTS! Snake Eyes is a hard ninja to kill...which is why COBRA Commander has called in one of his biggest guns to do the job: the assassin Firefly! What is the history behind this COBRA'S rivalry with Snake Eyes? And can the Joes' ninja overcome this deadly saboteur in time to help his teammates retrieve the stolen Transformer technology from COBRA'S secret Arctic base? It's chaos on the ice as the Autobots face off against Destro's deadly COBRA/Decepticon hybrid warriors, with Starscream waiting to pick up the pieces!

AUTOBOT vs. AUTOBOT! It's a robot riot as the new Cold War over the Transformers really starts to heat up! The G.I. Joes and their Autobot allies try to reconcile their opposing views and unite against COBRA... but can they? What is the terrible secret buried beneath Cobra Island? Whatever it is, Starscream and Soundwave want it bad... bad enough to destroy Cobra Commander if he doesn't give it to them! Flint and the Autobots must prepare an all-out assault of the island themselves to prevent the villains' evil plans, but can the G.I. Joes count on Snake Eyes to help them...or will his vendetta against Firefly doom them all?

COBRA's plans for domination are in full effect and, thanks to Destro, the Autobots and the Joes are now public enemy #1! Even so, will our heroes be able to thwart Destro's plans? Maybe... but you won't believe who going to help them out. The ultimate retro crossover is about to go out with a bang!

Comics#31

In the Fera Islands in winter, 1938, Major Sebastian Bludd leads an assault squad against a defenseless town. They smash their way into a place of worship, where Bludd finds what Cobra Commander believes is an ultimate weapon - a strange glowing object inside a statue. Bludd is unimpressed, but when he touches it, the building starts to collapse! He thinks it's started an earthquake, but it is in fact the awakening of a giant robot! Megatron tells Bludd that he has found the ultimate power - he has awakened the Decepticons!
In summer of 1939, in Arlington, VA, Sergeant Lorenzo Wilkinson reports for duty. A man named Flint welcomes Wilkinson to something called the Pit, telling him there's a general waiting down the hall to address him and the rest of the best - G.I. Joe.
Wilkinson is followed by a mysterious man who tosses Flint a pair of dice, with snake eyes showing, revealing his identity. Flint chews him out for tossing dice at him and begins to tell him to go meet the general - but Snake-Eyes is already gone.
Soon, in the briefing, the general tells his new team that for the past two years, the United States has been concerned about developments in Europe and in the Pacific Rim. Things have taken a turn for the worse - a team of 12 intelligence operatives went into Western Europe and only two came back.
The two returning operatives - Jaye and Scarlett - take over the briefing. They show images of France's famed Maginot Line, devastated; of Paris, overrun; of Rome, conquered. The emblem on the flags of the conquerors appears to be a Cobra.
The general tells the room that the nation is not prepared for a second world war. The task of G.I. Joe is to break the Cobra's fangs before it comes to that.
Snake-Eyes suddenly notices something up near the ceiling. It has wings, and a vulture's head, and as Duke takes aim with his pistol, it retaliates with a laser that slices the gun in two and pierces Duke's hand. The creature flies away....
24 hours later Laserbeak arrives in the Fera Islands, at Cobra's TerrorDrome headquarters, and reports to Soundwave, revealing the Americans' assault plans. Destro believes they must withdraw forces from Europe to defend the Fera Island and the TerrorDrome. Cobra Commander reminds him that no one knows the fortress even exists outside of Cobra, and if the heroes do find them, they will crush them all. Starscream agrees, saying heroes are born to die - heroes and fools.
At Sumburgh RAF base in Scotland's Shetland Islands, the Joes prepare for a night drop. Grunt complains that they have no intel, no backup, no transports, no artillery and no armor - they're going to get eaten alive. Scarlett shows them a chunk of a battleship hull with a map apparently gouged into the side of it - a map of the Fera islands, along with two symbols - the Cobra, and another they don't recognize. They don't know who made it where it came from, but that's where they're going.
Soon the Joes are on board their plane heading for the drop zone. Along the way they're buzzed by three flying objects - Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave, heading towards Britain. The three Decepticons make quick work of the RAF planes they meet, and prepare to conquer London.
Six hours later the Joes drop into the Fera Islands. Duke is worried that the team hasn't had enough time together to actually function as a team, when they're attacked by a sniper. Two Joes go down, but Snake-Eyes recognizes the sniper - Stormshadow. Stormshadow easily bests his "brother," as he calls Snake-Eyes, in combat, and takes his sword to Snake-Eyes' face...
The Joes retreat into the ruins, and Duke laments about losing so many men. Before they get too far, though, Duke sees something he doesn't expect - a giant metal monster head in the ruins...

Having escaped the ambush from the combined Decepticon and Cobra forces, the remaining G.I. Joe assault team members: Duke, Roadblock, Leatherneck and Scarlett: barricade themselves in the ancient ruins around them: ruins which include the deactivated bodies of more giant robots.
In digging through the ruins, though, they accidentally reactivate the robots' repair system. It launches a satellite to explore and assimilate data, data that it will use to repair the fallen Autobots.
Starscream observes the satellite and says ominously, "my star is rising."
The first Autobot repaired is Ironhide. The Joes quickly attack, but their bullets bounce off him. He manages to catch them before they hit anyone, and tells them to be careful: someone could get hurt.
Not far away, Snake-Eyes and Stormshadow duel on the battlements of the Cobra fortress. Stormshadow has the upper hand and cuts Snake-Eyes across the face, several times. Snake-Eyes holds him off long enough for Stalker to arrive, and Stormshadow is forced to run from Stalker's attack.
Stalker tells Snake-Eyes he's got to get back to Scarlett, their nurse, so she can take a look at his ravaged face. But Snake-Eyes ignores the pain, and takes off after Stormshadow. Stalker says he's seen the way Snake-Eyes and Scarlett look at each other, and he knows she wants to get to know the man behind the mask... but the man doesn't have a face to show her anymore.
Snake-Eyes follows Stormshadow through the forest, stealthily enough to see Stormshadow contact a group of Cobras in a foxhole to set up an ambush. Snake-Eyes sneaks around behind them, and takes them all out before they can make a sound. But he realizes he's lost too much blood. There's only two things that stoop the flow of blood: time, and fire. Since he's out of time, he throws some gunpowder on his face and stands in front of a flamethrower...
Stormshadow calls out to Snake-Eyes, asking him if he's too much of a coward to face him alone. Of course, he's hoping to draw Snake-Eyes into his ambush. Snake-Eyes tosses him the helmet of one of the Cobra troopers, letting Stormshadow know just what he thinks of his ambush. Stormshadow runs.
Back in the ruins, a now reactivated Optimus Prime explains to Duke how the war between the Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron led them here. Grimlock, Jazz, Prowl, Bumblebee and Hound have also been reactivated. Prime says they have no idea what's going on now, which angers Leatherneck: he says nothing's changed, the Decepticons are just attacking defenseless earth cities. He reminds the Joes that they have a mission to attend to. Hound and Ironhide want to tag along, but Prowl reminds them they don't know what's going on. Grimlock agrees with Leatherneck: regardless of where they are or how they look now, the only good Decepticon is a smashed one.
Starscream continues to eavesdrop, but Megatron sneaks up on him, furious that he's allowed the Autobots to become reactivated. He tells Starscream that no matter what he's plotting, he will never posses the Matrix, or lead the Decepticons. He tells Starscream to transfer the energon cubes to a secure location, and then they'll destroy the Autobots once and for all.
Meanwhile, Destro informs Cobra Commander that they've lost contact with several outposts and with Stormshadow. To Destro's dismay, the Commander sends Wild Weasel and a squadron of Rattlers for recon. He then turns to a monitor bank and addresses a blurry face: "Zartan... come out and play."
Wild Weasel's squadron catches Duke's unit out in the open. Luckily for them, Grimlock's on the scene: in his new tank mode! He blasts a couple of Rattlers out of the sky, confusing Wild Weasel: "I thought the death machine men from the abyss were on our side!" Cobra Commander orders a retreat until the Decepticons can arrive.
Elsewhere, Snake-Eyes enters the Cobra castle in pursuit of Stormshadow. Donning a face mask and borrowing a sword from an ancient body of armour, he finally comes face to face with his blood brother. Stormshadow suggests that Snake-Eyes slay himself, and receive a clean death: because Stormshadow's new friend, Ravage, will offer no such mercy...

The second G.I. Joe strike team, consisting of Flint, Lady Jaye, Beach Head, Breaker, Grunt and Lifeline, waits patiently for the signal from the first team that Cobra's communications systems have been knocked out. When the Cobra/Decepticon seeker jets fly by overhead, Breaker suggests they call in the fleet now: but Flints reminds him of their orders. Once the comm systems are down, team two has to take out the enemy airfield: and then the fleet can be called in.
Elsewhere, Stalker, having been separated from team one, searches for his comrades. After taking out a wandering Cobra, he's almost stepped on by an Aerialbot! The Aerialbot leads him to his teammates, who he informs of his bad news: he lost Snake-Eyes. Duke won't believe it until he sees a body, but Scarlett is visibly upset. Bumblebee tries to help by reminding them that Stalker was lost as well, but he was found.
Before they can look for him, however, Cobra paratroopers begin to descend from the skies, and the Joes and Autobots begin to take heavy fire.
Meanwhile, at the Terror Drome several miles away, Megatron orders Cobra soldiers to move his energon cubes aboard a submarine. Cobra Commander reminds him that he is in charge, and when Megatron objects, the Baroness points her gun: filled with explosive, armor-piercing bullets: at the Decepticon leader's eye. Megatron laughs, but the Commander reveals that he has the Matrix: and he knows how to use it. With it he can inflict pain on, and therefore control, the Decepticons. Megatron relents... for now.
Not far away, Storm Shadow watches as his blood brother Snake-Eyes fights the Decepticon panther, Ravage. Snake-Eyes demonstrates just how capable a warrior he his by quickly dispatching of the beast with a grenade. He then fights his way through another trio of Cobra soldiers before once again facing off with Storm Shadow. They fight, and Snake-Eyes gains the upper hand: but will not kill Storm Shadow. Storm Shadow mistakes this for weakness, and leaps down to a gun emplacement. Before he can turn the weapon on Snake-Eyes however, he learns that Snake-Eyes is not necessarily so merciful: a grenade falls on the ground beside him. Storm Shadow is finished.
The explosions are the signal Flint is looking for. He decides it's time to make the call, and goes to find Breaker. Unfortunately, Zartan has emerged from the water nearby and killed Breaker, taking his place. Flint approaches, and having no idea that Breaker is Zartan in disguise, begins detailing the next steps of the plan...
Elsewhere, Roadblock and Grimlock continue to plow through Cobra gun emplacements, not realizing one of the soldiers is actually not a Cobra at all: it's Rumble in disguise. He transforms his arms to piledriver mode and opens a chasm right in front of the oncoming Autobot tank...

At the Fera Islands, Flint orders Breaker to call in the American invasion force. But he quickly realizes the radio Breaker's using is not theirs: nor is Breaker the same. Flint orders the rest of the team to proceed to the airfield while he takes care of "Breaker": who is now revealed as Zartan.
The two fight, but Zartan has backup: Soundwave. He snatches Flint up, and Zartan tells him to keep him intact, because he knows the Joes' battle plans. Soundwave takes Flint and Zartan back to the Terror Drome.
The rest of Flint's unit takes the airfield with ease: it appears to be unguarded. Beach Head goes on to the tower himself, to find a radio, and tells the rest of the team to get a plane running: if all else fails they can call the fleet from the air.
On an adjacent island, Rumble continues his assault on the Autobots and Joes. They're forced to fall back before the opening fissure, but Scarlett has other ideas. She hopes on top of Bumblebee in his motorcycle mode, and the pair makes a beeline for Rumble. Scarlett uses the "riptide" effect of his earth-shaking as a ramp, and as she and Bumblebee sail over Rumble's head, she deftly drops a grenade on him.
But it doesn't look like it's enough to save Grimlock. The crumbling ground is forcing him down the cliff into the sea, and he tries to hold on long enough for Roadblock to jump off of him, lest he fall in too. But Roadblock tells him "we don't try around here: and we don't quit!" Inspired, Grimlock hangs on long enough for the Aerialbots to merge into Superion and carry him away.
A mile to the north, Stormshadow: somehow having survived Snake-Eyes' grenade attack: attacks again.
